Monday, 29 September 2014

I work in Central, Hongkong, and I live in Causeway Bay, just next to Excelsior Hotel.  The distance is about 3km.  Each night after work, I try to walk home.

The is the first picture I took on Monday night walking home from the office.  The building in the background is the City Halll library.  As you can see, everything is very orderly, except an eight lane expressway is filled with sitting protesters.

Notice the protesters used colored chalk and electrical tape, not spray paint.  The second night I saw a man climbing onto a bus stop / rain barrier with a bucket of paint to cover some graffiti.  Seeing this, the crowd clapped as the man painted over the scrawled words: "Dismiss Government".  This is an organized, diligent crowd.

This is the heart of the protest, in front of the legislative council (LegCo) building.  I normally call it the parliment building.  This is normally a ten lane expressway.  It's hard to guess how many people at the core, but at least 10,000.

The Chinese writing means something like "xyz died here".  I don't know the first two characters.  (Please comment if you know.)  Notice the bus has no damage except a few cardboard signs attached.  No burnouts or stones thrown in this protest.

A friendly reminder from the City: Please don't drink and drive.  And drive, they shall not.  This part of the road comes just after the parliment building.

This is a supply station.  You see them every 100 meters on the roadway.  They have bottles of water, crackers, bananas, and tissues.  There are also first aid stations (which I will show later).  The bandage on the young woman's forehead is not from injury.  It is common practice to wear them in Asian cities during very hot times.  There is some embedded chemical reactions that feels cool to the touch.  A bit like a chemical heatpack, but inverted.
